Zero One Design is a design company founded in 1997 and based in Victoria, British Columbia. Right from the beginning, the partners envisioned creating products and programs that could focus on arts and culture: Zero One Design has been working with artists, curators and museum professionals ever since.

Zero One Design is western Canada’s only design firm that works exclusively for museums, galleries and related non profits. From artists catalogues to Canadian shipwrecks, architecture to the history of mining, the web sites of Zero One Design are renowned and recognized by the Canadian government, professionals in conservation and museum archives and educators and enthusiasts of Canadian culture and history. Their focus on digital collections has paved the way for the development of Madrona and its specialized web integration.

Zero One Design continues to learn with every client. The vision they began with in the 1990s has become a firm mandate in the twenty-first century, and they have honed their experience in galleries and museums, both by representing established cultural institutions and by creating online exhibits of subjects that defy the boundaries of built displays.

Madrona: the Next Passionate Step

With over 13 years of experience, our designers at Zero One Design knew what was needed in the world of archive and collection management. Clients needed to share history and material culture important to their families, communities and organizations. For the creation of Madrona, Zero One Design embraced the world of Web 2.0 and imagined the possibilities of a truly well-functioning collections management system. The team at Zero One Design created Madrona to rival the best in collections management system in the world.

Zero One Design’s interest in collections management dates back to the 1993, when work on an early collections management system, Superbase, piqued their interest. Creating programs to work within Superbase sharpened their program development skills and led them to create a a system that reflects their clients’ ideas. Through ongoing consultation with archivists and museum professionals, Zero One learned exactly what was missing from many current collections management systems. They tackled the problem head on, creating Madrona, the collections management system that fills a long empty niche in the collections management industry.
